Our Story

Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation is a non -governmental organization with registration number RC: 144352. SWEEP Foundation is a social enterprise committed to addressing environmental and waste management issues, and taking action to improve the environment through waste and environmental education programs. SWEEP helps communities develop skills to make informed and responsible decisions affecting their immediate environment.

SWEEP Foundation works to promote the sustainable development goals through through advocacy, training and monitoring on projects and initiatives that promote and improve access to social and economic opportunities for people especially women/youth, while driving community engagement in environment and waste management using innovative Behaviour Change (BC) methodology.

What We Do

Training

TRAININGS

are conducted periodically to educate and up-date the capacity of stakeholders and members of the general public by enhancing them with new tactics and additional skills in waste prevention, reduction and management.

Advocacy

ADVOCACY

through town hall meetings, workshops, sporting activities are organized at intervals to discuss challenges to sustainable waste management regime, proffer ideas and solutions. This will also acquaint members, the general public with current trends in the waste prevention and management sector.

Sanitation

MONITORING

activities are routinely carried out across our different communities to ensure widespread observance of sustainable sanitation standards. The actions, inactions of community gatekeepers are monitored and abuses reported.

Recycling

and community clean-up outreaches are carried out at intervals with the aim of promoting clean, green and sustainable communities while sensitising the communities on different behavioural change approaches and methodologies they can adopt.

OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of the foundation is to promote sustainable environment and waste reduction, prevention and management education, waste to wealth training activities aimed at providing health and social benefits and form a greater sense of empowerment that will expand into everyday life.

  • To enhance environmental sustainability by harnessing and nurturing individual and corporate citizens desire to acquire waste management skills and entrepreneurial education in the areas of Waste Management, Recycling, Waste-to-Energy, Waste-to-Wealth, Community Advocacy, and Environmental Sanitation.
  • To reduce youth involvement in crime by extracting out-of-school and underprivileged young people from the streets and build their capacities through skills acquisition in the areas of Waste Management, Recycling, Waste-to-Energy, Waste-to-Wealth, Community Advocacy, Environmental Sanitation.
  • To improve communities and their environment by introducing and involving citizens for evacuation of wastes from markets, motor parks, Road sides, clearing of blocked drainages and canals, extraction of recyclable wastes from the environment, planting of tress around public spaces, house to house advocacy campaign.

Our Initiatives

Lagos Waste Forum

The Lagos Waste Forum

The Lagos Waste Forum is a High Level Citizens Forum on Waste Reduction, an initiative of SWEEP Foundation in partnership with Coca-Cola Company and LAWMA to co-create strategies to drive a Circular Economy in Nigeria. Aptly tagged the “Future of Waste Forum” it has drawn the widest variety of sustainability professionals. The forum is focused on the active participation of the community individually and collectively in waste reduction as a solution in the fight against municipal wastes disposal and management in Lagos State.

Waste in the City

The “Waste In The City” is a statewide initiative driving community by community grassroots involvement in environmental sanitation, advocacy by promoting support for the environmental sustainability. Our goal is to promote widespread environmental and waste management education, and is a direct response to the growing challenges of plastic and other domestic waste constituting environmental nuisance to public spaces especially in Lagos state.

The Waste in the City project seeks to provide sustainable solution to clean environment thereby improve communities by introducing and involving citizens for evacuation of wastes from markets, motor parks, road sides, clearing of blocked drainages and canals, extraction of recyclable wastes from the environment, planting of tress around public spaces, house to house advocacy campaign.

Green Campus Project

The Green Campus Project

“The Green Campus Project” is a university community recyclable waste reduction project that will establish sustainable recyclable drop-off points (recycle Banks) and deployment of mobile recyclable collection receptacles across six (6) selected University campuses while, at the same time, providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for students, women and youth resident around target campus communities. The project will establish a Green Hub, an eco-friendly environment for students, staff, and partners to come together in a collaborative space and working collaboratively to create a campus where everyone can thrive. The Green Campus Project will establish data collection systems that will track and report on the quantum of recyclable plastics collection within and around campus communities.

Eko Beach Race

Tagged a race against ocean plastic pollution, Eko Beach Race is a sustainable initiative harnessing the power of sport tourism to address ocean plastic pollution. Eko Beach Race is designed to drive youth communities involvement in environmental awareness and sanitation, promote environmental sustainability, sport tourism and support for government’s sport, tourism and waste management policy. Beach Racing is an entirely new concept hosting a marathon race along the sandy beach shores, thereby creating a new sporting activity, a new investment corridor and harnessing the many tourism opportunities along Nigerian beach shorelines.

Obuesi Phillips is the Director, Centre for Waste Management Education, legal practitioner, a public commentator of repute, a prominent civil rights and environmental activist, the Global Director, Community Agenda for Peace (CAP), a decorated UN Ambassador for SDGs and the Executive Director, SWEEP Foundation.

Secretary

Tayo is business woman and environmentalist. A teachable and self-motivated and strong lady. Tayo is the organising secretary of Beach Race Club that organises and hosts the now very popular Lagos Beach Marathon since 2012. The Lagos Beach Marathon has produced high impact athletes that have gone on to win local and international long distance competitions.

Engr. OlusegunAbayomiOyedkoB.Sc (Hons), M.N.S.E, R.ENGR (COREN) is an engineer per excellence, a consummate businessman, building contractor and politician. Engr. Oyedeko is a vibrant young Nigerian passionate about national development, crime prevention, advocacy against Drug abuse and underage drinking, Cyber-crime. Currently, he is a Board member and the National Director of Mobilisation for SWEEP Foundation.
